Dani has been an advocate for improving mental health services and supports for people living with mental illness and the family and friends who support them since 1996. Dani’s passion and commitment to this work evolved from her own personal experience of supporting family members and close friends with serious mental illnesses, along with her own lived experience with anxiety and depression. Over the years Dani has been a family representative for mental health on numerous committees at the IWK and the Mental Health and Addictions Program. In addition to her committee work, Dani has sat on the board of the Healthy Minds Cooperative and the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia. Dani also has 15 years of experience facilitating family support and education groups through Laing House, SSNS and the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In 2012 and 2013 Dani completed training from the Meriden Family Programme in the UK as a facilitator and trainer for Families Matter in Mental Health program, an 11-week evidence-based education program for family and friends who support a loved one with a mental illness. Dani has also received the Inspiring Lives Award from the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia and the MICA Award from the Department of Health and Wellness.
